Redondo Beach, CA - May 2, 2007 - When Palos Verdes' Peninsula Heritage School (PHS) was making plans to hold their third Young Writers' Conference (YWC), they decided to play host  to the St. Albert the Great School, located in Compton, and give their young student writers the opportunity to participate in the day long professional writing conference.  The Young Writers' Conference is a Los Angeles based organization dedicated to improving young people's writing skills by first instilling a passion for writing.

St. Albert the Great's 38 fourth and fifth grade students will join the Peninsula Heritage students for  "Write, Camera, Action!", featuring 34 workshops, all led by professional writers from a variety of disciplines, on Friday, May 4th from 8:30 to 2:45.

The students and faculty have created a "Walk of Fame", complete with a red carpet and paparazzi, as a way to recognize and welcome the resident and visiting writing stars.  Students at both schools will have specially prepared writings on display: including book cover illustrations, book reports, poetry, and creative writings ranging from mysteries to adventure stories.

"All the students are excited about the writing they have done to prepare for the conference, and the fact that they are going to be so beautifully displayed," said Kim Nygaard, PHS's Coordinator for YWC, and author of Survivor PE Style.  "They are very excited about meeting professional writers and we know that the day will inspire them with their writing."

Bookdrive

cartooningPeninsula Heritage, in anticipation of the conference, kicked off a book drive to benefit the library of their guest school, with the goal of collecting 100 books.  They have already hit over 150, and 200 or even 300 seems a possibility by Friday.

Workshops

Students will attend four sessions, for which they have pre-registered on-line.   Workshops range from Tonie Campbell's, author of The Highest Stand, which won the 2003 Young Adults/Children's Book of the Year Award, workshop entitled Daring to Dream (Putting Dreams to Paper), to John VanDenEykel, author of several books on cartooning with his Cartooning a Sentence workshop, to Nancy D'Aleo -Russey, often published and produced playwright and children's author, with her interactive session entitled, Let's Imagine! Ignite Your Writing Skills Through Theatre Games.

About Young Writers' Conference

In 1998, the National Writing Commission on Writing in America's Schools issued a call to launch a writing revolution in our country's schools; a call that was answered with the foundation of the Young Writers' Conference (YWC) in the Los Angeles area.  Now in its ninth year, YWC continues to bring their program, which is organized like a university conference, to elementary and middle school students throughout the Los Angeles region.  Pairing students with professional writers from a wide variety of disciplines, the students participate in a series of workshops designed to fulfill the mission of improving their writing skills by first instilling a passion for writing.  For more information, please visit: www.youngwritersconference.org.
