Press Release--November 12, 2007 Redondo Beach, CA--
The Young Writers' Conference (YWC) is kicking off its 10th season at Adams Middle School in Redondo Beach on Monday, November 19th. The Young Writers' Conference is a Los Angeles based organization dedicated to improving young people's writing skills by first instilling a passion for writing. This is the second year that the YWC has been invited to bring their professional day-long conference to Adams Middle School. Over 315 eighth graders will participate.
A letter to the student body from Principal Mr. Jon Pede is printed at the beginning of the conference program and reads, in part:
"The art of writing is exactly that...an art. To be able to communicate your innermost thoughts and ideas via the written word and have a reader understand and be moved by your writing is a tremendous gift. I encourage you to open your minds, put away any anxiety or fear of writing and let your pen (or pencil) to your talking."
The conference will kick off with Keynote Speaker - Jeff Savage, a leading writer of non-fiction books for children, who is also a dynamic and engaging speaker. His award-winning list of over 150 books includes biographies of positive role models in sports and entertainment, current events, and historical accounts of settling the West.
Jeff Savage is an eight-time winner of the International Reading Association-Children's Book Council Children's Choice Award and winner of the Voice of Youth Advocates Non-Fiction Honor Award. More than 80 of his books have been adopted by the National Accelerated Reader Program.
Jeff tells the young writers about how he became a sportswriter for the San Diego Union-Tribune, and shares some of his favorite memories, including "watching John Elway lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl" and seeing "Joe Montana's perfect passes in a 48-0 victory against the Rams" at Candlestick Park.
After the keynote, the students attend workshops on specific topics that they have previously selected and registered for online. Nineteen workshops are featured, with each student selecting four.
Workshops include Matthew Harrison on Making Movies. Harrison's Rhythm's Thief won a Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and Martin Scorsese served as executive producer on his original screenplay and third feature, Kicked in the Head.
Quinton Peebles has written and directed a number of successful films featuring such stars as Anne Heche, Tobey Maguire and Benicio Del Toro. He is currently working on a project with Billy Crystal, but will spend the day at Adams leading a session entitled, Frankenstein's Guide to Building the Perfect Character.
Award-winning author of teen novels, Marlene Perez, will lead a session on Making Paranormal Characters Real, where students can find their own inner voice as they create memorable characters in fantasy and paranormal fiction. Under her pen name, Lana Perez, Dead is the New Black will be released in the summer of 2008 by Scholastic/Point, as the first title in a trilogy.
The day concludes with a Writers' Wrap-up assembly.

About Young Writers' Conference
In 1998, the National Writing Commission on Writing in America's Schools issued a call to launch a writing revolution in our country's schools; a call that was answered with the foundation of the Young Writers' Conference (YWC) in the Los Angeles area. Now celebrating its tenth year, YWC continues to bring their program, which is organized like a university conference, to elementary and middle school students throughout the Los Angeles region. Pairing students with professional writers from a wide variety of disciplines, the students participate in a series of workshops designed to fulfill the mission of improving their writing skills by first instilling a passion for writing.
